Patuxent River - Flowing through the Piedmont Patuxent River State Park - The upper 12 miles of the river flow through this 6700 acre state park, popular for hunting and fishing. The park also has unmarked hiking and bridle paths. (Map) Triadelphia and T. Howard Duckett Reservoirs - Much of the next strectch of river from State Rt 97 to I-95 sits beneath the WSSC's two reservoirs. There is controlled access for fishing, boating, hiking, picnicing and hunting. WSSC owns 4200 acres around the reservoirs. Fran Uhler Natural Area - includes wooded floodplains, non-tidal wetlands, upland forests and meadows. The park has more than five miles of woodland trails open for hiking, bicycling, and nature study (More Info) (Map) Washington, Baltimore & Annapolis Recreational Trail - running northeasterly to the Patuxent River (Map) Governor's Bridge Natural Area & Canoe Launch - includes an 8 acre lake, canoe launch, hiking, bicycling, nature study and fishing opportunities. Access is restricted. Patuxent River - Queen Anne to Lower Marlboro Patuxent River 4-H Center - located on 74 acres of land near the Patuxent River, the center is a cooperative venture between the Patuxent River 4-H Foundation, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service. Patuxent River Scenic Trail at Queen Anne - a 4-mile natural surface woodland trail for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. Queen Anne Fishing Area & Canoe Launch - The Fishing Area is open daily during the season, but closed in the winter. Anglers are permitted on the old bridge and along both sides of the river. The river is tidal so a Chesapeake Bay sport fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. The Canoe Launch is located adjacent to the Patuxent River 4-H Center. A floating pier provides easy access to the river and parking is available. This is also a launch site for the Patuxent River Water Trail. The river is susceptible to seasonal flooding so visitors are encouraged to check river conditions and plan ahead. Access is restricted. Billingsley House Museum - a brick Tidewater Colonial plantation house that sits on 430 acres overlooking the confluence of the Patuxent River. Mount Calvert Historical & Archaeological Park - Mount Calvert is one of the most significant historical and archaeological sites in Prince George's County featuring a small museum chronicalling over 8000 years of Native American, Euro-American and African American culture at the site. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary and Glendening Preserve - on the Anne Arundel side of the river consists of more than 1400 acres of tidal freshwater wetlands, forests, meadows and fields along the Patuxent River. Operated by the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks Jug Bay Natural Area - on the Prince Georges side of the river consists of 2000 acres of various natural habitats operated by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation. The two sister parks of Jug Bay are a component of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve System and are also recognized as a Nationally Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy and the National Audubon Society. Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary - a 1670 acre wildlife sanctuary operated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Patuxent River - Kings Landing to the Chesapeake Bay Kings Landing Park - With a history stretching back to Captain John Smith's exploration this 265 acre multi-purpose park offer access for kayakers, canoeists, and fishermen as well as hiking trails and interpretative exhibits. There are also an amphitheater, picnic areas, a new equestrian facility and a visitor center at Patuxent Hall. Bowen Wildlife Management Area - 300 acres of tidal marsh in southern Prince Georges Country Cedar Haven Fishing Area - located in the southeastern corner of the Prince Georges county, adjacent to the town of Eagle Harbor Battle Creek Cypress Swamp - A 100 acre preserve protecting the northernmost stand of bald cypress trees. Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum - a 560-acre park located along 2.5 miles of Patuxent River and St. Leonard Creek. The park is home to an archeological treasure-trove covering over 70 sites spanning 9,000 years of human history. Sotterley Plantation - An 18th century Tidewater Plantation along 95 acres of the Patuxent, open to the public with various visitor activities and educational programs. Greenwell State Park - a 596-acre State Park located on the Patuxent River in St. Mary's county with hiking, swimming, fishing, and canoe launch. Calvert Marine Museum - Located in Solomons, this museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation, research, and interpretation of the culture and natural history of Southern Maryland. |
