This week, NRG Energy signaled that it plans to retire the Chalk Point (Patuxent) and Dickerson (Potomac) coal plants in May 2017. Chalk Point, located along the Patuxent River in Prince George's County, and also Dickerson, located in Montgomery County, are 2 of only 7 remaining coal plants in the state.
After ten years as the Riverkeeper program serving the Patuxent watershed, we feel we can speak to Calvert County residents as friends, members, boosters and patrons who share both our love of the Patuxent, the natural environment and of Calvert County.
A coalition of local, regional, and national groups are objecting to the environmental impacts posed by the proposed Dominion Cove Point liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal on the Chesapeake Bay, saying the project would hurt the Bay's economy and ecology, increase air pollution, and hasten fracking and drilling in neighboring states.
On April 6th and 13th, volunteers came together to remove trash and debris from the Patuxent River and its tributaries. In total 467 volunteers worked at 20 sites throughout the watershed to remove 26,680 lbs of trash and debris.
